Aston Villa 0 Arsenal 2: Gunners seal comfortable win as Man City clash looms on the horizon

With Leicester to play on Monday and the prior contrasting results of the 2 Manchester clubs; it was imperative that Arsenal secured a result that would maintain momentum in their title push.

Aston Villa, a side that have failed to register a Premier League win since the opening day of the season, were aiming to capitalise on Arsenal’s mental and physical fatigue after their midweek excursions. We’d just come off a memorable midweek triumph in Greece and a victory against Villa would’ve been the icing on top of a perfect week for the Gunners. The prospect of Cech matching David James’ Premier League clean sheet record acted as extra incentive as we looked to go top of the table.

Giroud's converted penalty made it 6 goals in six games

The West Midland side looked the brighter side in the opening 5 minutes but an uncharacteristic through ball by Mathieu Flamini allowed Walcott to get wrong side of Allan Hutton and the Villa right back was forced to pull the England international to the ground. Kevin Friend pointed to the penalty spot albeit belatedly and inform Giroud tucked away his 6th goal in his last 6 games. In that goal Giroud reached his 50th Premier League goal milestone and only 2 Arsenal legends, in Thierry Henry and Ian Wright were able to do so in fewer games.

The opening goal put an end to Villa’s posturing and Arsenal were able to gain control, passing the ball around comfortably, probing for a second goal. On the 19th minute a wonderfully floated free kick by Ozil found the big French man who had his looping header cleared off the line by Rudy Gestede.

Arsenal continued to press forward and on the 37th minute they finally managed to add to their lead with a tap in via Aaron Ramsey. The Welshman began the move with an untidy tackle on Idrissa Gueye, we countered swiftly, working the ball to Ozil who faked and squared the ball to the on rushing Ramsey for an easy finish. Ozil added to his already impressive assist tally, making it 13 in the league this season.  His brilliant movement, awareness and decision making once again allowed Ramsey to demonstrate his productivity when played in the center of midfield. Ramsey’s 3rd goal of the season is Arsenal’s 14th consecutive goal that they’ve scored against Aston Villa without reply.

Arsenal continued their dominance and late into injury time Walcott was dubiously ruled offside after curling the ball around Brad Guzan from the edge of the Villa penalty area. We went into halftime 2 goals up, with us looking comfortable and Villa looking bereft of confidence and ideas.

Petr Cech's 169th clean sheet equals the Premier League record

It was the second half the particularly highlighted the effects of Arsenal’s grueling midweek clash against Olympiakos. Although we remained largely comfortable, you could see signs of fatigue in our play. We weren’t providing options as regularly as in the first half and the passing became slightly disjointed. Villa looked to increase the intensity of their play in an attempt to take advantage of a reduction in Arsenal’s; however poor end product on their part meant we never really looked in  danger of conceding. Rémi Garde was unable to get one over his teacher Wenger and now Cech’s clean sheet count now stands at 169; equaling David James’ record despite playing James playing 223 more games.

Another 3 points in the bag and we now occupy top spot going into next week’s title clash against Manchester City. Leicester can still overtake us if they can win against faltering champions Chelsea however, this week’s results should give us increased confidence next Monday under the lights, at the Emirates.
